31DC2017 - Inspired by a song

I always find this prompt so tricky. I find it really hard to find inspiration from a some, but today this one just clicked when I saw the dancing bodies on the Bundle Monster plate that I stamped on my ring and pinky fingers.

As soon as I saw them I though they looked like people dancing, and more specifically, like they were shaking. So my inspiration for this mani is the Taylor Swift song, Shake it off.

My kids just love dancing away to this song. In fact, at school, they have replaced the school bell with a 10 second audio clip of either Shake it Off, or Happy by Pharrel Williams.

So what's going on here on my nails, well I was inspired by the video clip for this song. There are lots of costumes and many distinct looks.  To start with I did a grey gradient background just like the background on the video clip.  I did the cassette deck player with red stamping to represent the part where she wears the black leather plants and the red bomber jacket.  The ballet shoe represents the part with the ballet dancers (obviously) and then there are the people dancing, or "shaking it off". I even painted on gold to represent her gold outfit.

The prompt today is 'inspired by a colour', and each year I've interpreted this to be inspired the the name of a polish.  For the third time in five years, I've chosen a polish from Dance Legend. I just that shows that they have some well chosen names among their polishes.

Now I've actually chosen two polishes from Dance Legend for the inspired by. Red Pill and Blue Pill from the Matrix collection. There are six polishes in the collection and they are all inspired by the Matrix movie.  These two are absolutely amazing, and the pick of the bunch in my opinion. Be sure to scroll to the bottom to see my swatches of Red Pill and Blue Pill.

For the nail art, I attempted to create the actual Red and Blue pills like the appear in the movie. On the other fingers I created the Matrix by stamping the binary numbers from BM415 in two shades of green.

31DC2017 - Watermarble

Water-marble day was one I always dreaded, not any more! I love water marble day cause I finally have the knowledge to work out what's wrong with a marble and fix it.

Today I've gone back to one of my favourite brands to water marble with, which become quite the indie polish world sensation with this collection simply for the fact that it water marbled so perfectly.  My bottles are getting pretty old now, at least two and a half years I'd say, and they still marble like they were new, even though the bottles are about two thirds full.

For today's design, I created the marbles on water and let the dry and applied them like decals.  It was so much cleaner doing it that way. I also felt I got better placement of the patterns and I didn't use up as much polish as doing it the regular water dipping technique. So if you have the time to allow the polish to dry in the cup, and at least two cups (I actually did three in case I messed up and needed another full pattern) then I highly recommend doing it the decal way.

31DC2017 - Galaxy 3D curtain pull

Day 19 - Yippee, the end is in sight ladies, although the last third of the challenge is definitely the toughest.

Today's theme is Galaxy, and I got the idea for today's mani from the always innovative @Narmai, or PiggyLuv. Back in 2015 she created what she called a curtain pull design, with a little bit of 3D texture to really give it a surrealistic look.

I used that inspiration to have a little rocket, flying through space, with a thread behind it that was pulling away the galaxy curtain.  Unfortunately it's really hard to see my 3D elements on the curtain pull part, maybe it needed to make them a bit higher, but if you look closely at the pictures you can see it.

Loving Pretty Serious' Daphne's Masquerade Party for the glittery holo effect in the galaxy.

31DC2017 - Half Moons with Picture Polish Macaron

Half moons is a prompt that I either totally smash it, or completely miss the mark. Last year and 2014 were both years where I hit it out of the park, 2015 was pretty damn awful. This year I'm not so sure. I was inspired by a design I saw through google images, but it wasn't watermarked so I don' know who to credit. The one I saw was also matte, and maybe that is why it looks so much better than mine? I dunno. I don't hate this, but I'm not loving it either. Maybe it's because it's spring time here and I want to wear bright colours and pastels, not dark vampy colours like this mani.

What I do love is the sparkly bling feature nail.  I used some new crystals I got from MilvArt, there are regular silver ones and aurora borealis ones which are multicoloured pastel shades.

The other thing I love about this mani is the half moon shade, which is a new colour from Picture Polish called Macaron. It's impossible for me to capture it accurately in my indoor photos, so I have some swatch photos below.

31DC2017 - Glitter

Who's up for some glitter placement action.  I know I am. Nothing gets me revved up to do glitter placement quite like the 31 Day Challenge.

This year I chose to do glitter placement with round glitter. OMG. I can't tell you how much faster and easier it is to do glitter placement with round glitter.  You don't have to worry about aligning the edges like you have to with square or hex glitters. It's totally awesome and I'm going to do more round glitter placement next time I think.

I chose some amazing black holo round glitters for my placement and I couldn't be happier with how they looked and how they photographed. They were amazing.  I also really liked using this top coat I got in a recent package from Dance Legend. The top coat is from the brand Step in Style colour and it was really, really thin.  I was able to do line after line of this top coat and then stick the glitter down onto it and it didn't get thick and gloopy. It's not going to be the sort of top coat I'd grab if I was trying to cover up a thirsty glitter, but for creating glittter placement this is now my number one choice.

31DC2017 - Geometric with Milv water decals

I tried something new with this mani. I used a water decal from MilvArt and painted it's underside to turn it into a coloured decal.

This water decal design is from the jewellery collection and comprises of metallic gold stripes that form various geometric patterns. Ordinarily you would just apply these decals over a single colour, or a gradient for example, but this time. I soaked the decal off the paper and then painted the underside.

I had a massive learning curve doing this, and am sure I would do a much better job next time. Firstly I learned that you have to use a very light touch with the polishes. If you apply too much polish to the underside of the decal, it simply dissolves.  This means it's best to use well pigmented polishes that are opaque in just one coat.  I used Pretty Serious Type 40 and OPI Big Apple Red.

All my painting was done with the decal slicked down onto a silicone mat, using the moisture from soaking it off the paper to give it a very smooth finish.  But after I had painted each decal, I peeled it up with tweezers and moved it to dry. This cause the metallic parts to crinkle up a fair bit.  It was only on the last 2-3 decals where I just left them smoothed out on the mat to dry completely before peeling them up that I had a much smoother finish with the gold. My index finger here was one of the more successful in this regard.

I look forward to trying this again with the Milv decals now I have learned what works.
What I didn't realize until I'm posting here tonight is that I used the exact same two colours in my geometric design last year, except with black instead of gold.

This the Milv water decal I used.  I absolutely love the Milv water decals because they are so thin, which makes them very easy to get smooth on your nail and also to do clean up around the cuticle.

It;s day 15 of the challenge already, which means we are half way. Yay.  I've managed to stay on top of it mostly, although I'm now only a few mani's ahead of the prompts now.  Although I do feel that the second half of the challenge is harder.

Today is the last day I need to combine the Digital Dozen prompt with the 31 Day Challenge. Today's prompt is delicate and I have painted some very delicate watercolour bubbles. The bubbles are in 5 five colour representing the 5th birthday for the Digital Dozen, plus birthday celebrations are always better with bubbles!  I know it looks like I did two pink bubbles on each nail, but the paints were actually red and magenta.

Oh my, I am really stretching the friendship with the prompt themes with this one!  Let me start by saying I love the final look.  But it's not really a strong flower theme now is it!

The five theme is pushing it a bit too. You see I hand painted 5 little flowers on each nail. Oh well. Like I said, I still like the final look. I haven't worn a hounds tooth design in ages, and I really love bold pattern designs with flowers either stamped or painted over.

Oh I nearly forgot. These glowed in the dark too. And really seriously glowed.  Over my white base of Dance Legend Glitter base, I rubbed in some Dance Legend Lumos powder. The powder is white, so you can't see it at all over a white base.  I did have a little trouble getting it to stick to my nail and ended up apply a layer of nail foil glue, which worked perfectly in making the pigment stick.  Here is a shot of the glow on it's own, and then the final mani.

31DC2017 - Animal Print and Digital Dozen turns 5

Combining animal prints with a '5' theme was always going to be a tough one, but I'm so happy with how these epic animal print nails turned out.

This mani really felt like a bit of an art project. There was painting, stamping, colouring in, cutting and pasting. It was the mani that just kept going and going.

This is what I did. I painted all the base colours onto a silicone mat. For the tiger print, I sponged a gradient onto the mat.  I then stamped on all the designs.  I actually used the same stamping image for both the tiger stripes and the zebra stripes, but stamped over different bases and applied on the nail at a different angle, they looked like different plates.  Once all the different prints were dry, I grabbed my scissors and cut thin stripes of each one and stuck them down onto my nails using a layer of top coat.  To neaten up the edges, I put a thin stripe of striping tape over each join.

In case you were wondering, this took bloody ages to do!

So there you have it. 5 animal prints to celebrate the Digital Dozens 5th birthday and the 31DC2017 animal prompt.  Prints are leopard, tiger, zebra, snake, giraffe.

Day 2 and day 12 all rolled into one. It's stripes for 31DC2017 and 5th Birthday for the Digital Dozen.

My stripes are the candles (which I actually used striping tape to make as neat and straight as possible) and the candles are the celebration for the 5th birthday.  I did one candle per finger, so that's the five (and we'll just pretend that I only have one hand and that by doing both hands I didn't actually have 10 candles ok).

I free handed the flames, and added a water colour halo around each flame for the glow.

My base polish is a pretty spectacular one. It's called Cuidado Garoto from DRK Nails and it's a rich royal blue that is really saturated with scattered holo flakes.

Here are some bonus swatches of Cuidado Garoto from DRK Nails.

31DC2017 - Dots and Digital Dozen turns 5

Oh my, I have really taken dots to another level with this mani. Today marks the beginning of the worst week of the 31 Day Challenge for me, where I try to combine two prompt themes into one mani.

The theme this week for the Digital Dozen is 5th Birthday, because can you believe the DD girls have been creating nail art as a group for that long!  All my mani's this week need to incorporate the '5' theme in some way, as well as meeting the prompt for the 31 Day challenge.

I think the dots are pretty obvious here, but the 5 is probably not so obvious.  The 5 is that I used five colours within my dots.  You can see it easily on the larger dots, were there are stripes of orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.

I created this mani by laying down a red gel base.  On top of that I covered my nails in the very thin 5 colour stripes.  Next up was dots using clear gel top coat and cure.  Lastly, I used polish remover to remove the rainbow stripes except where they were covered by the dots.

I also feel the overall look is very birthday party-ish too, like rainbow confetti or something.

31DC2017 - Gradient - Flowering Love trees

Just before the start of the 31 Day Challenge, I received a delightful package of goodies from DRK nails.  The package had various stamping plates, stampers and stamping polishes and some regular nail polishes as well.  I've not had a chance yet to try everything, but I am working my way through them.  Obviously with that introductory spiel, I've used some of those polishes for today's mani.

My gradient is a simple glitter gradient using two stunning glitter polishes from Brazilian indie brand Penelope Luz. 'I said yes' is a fine silver holo, with both microfine holo glitter and powder.  'Le Bouquet' would basically be considered the red equivalent. Despite my photos making it look a little pink, it really is a delicious rich red.

The stamping I added was from Konad Square image plate 31, the same one I used for my violet mani.  I used the little bare trees and then stamped on finger with some of the red hearts as blossoms.

Here are some swatches of both the Penelope Luz polishes, which absolutely do not do these polishes justice. They are both super sparkly and glittery and I failed to capture it at all!

They are both excellent coverage microfine glitters. These swatches are two coats each and one coat of top coat. For microfine glitters they weren't hungry for top coat, which is pretty cool

31DC2017 - Rainbow - Graceful rainbow stripes

Yay for Rainbow day. Always one of my favourite prompts of the challenge. I picked up the Grace-full Fruit Salad collection at Aussie Indie Con and I'm so thrilled with the purchase, but not so thrilld that I'm already about 1/4 used up on each bottle!

I'm such a sucker for collections of polishes that use the same tones and look amazing together when used in nail art. Pretty Serious Pastel Pets and Pipe Dream Polish ANIVC are to other collections that I'd put in this category.

This is another mani that I actually painted a few months back. When I started planning for the 31 Day Challenge I thought I would save this for stripes day, but because stripes day falls on the same week as the Digital Dozen challenge, it didn't fit with that additional prompt. So instead I figured it would work perfectly for rainbow day.
